I haven't had a perm since January, and recently cut the remaining perm off my hair due to a perm/color fiasco that took my hair out in patches. When I saw it for the first time in its all-natural state I was mortified. I looked like Celie from The Color Purple. It was nappy and I looked like a different person. But it made me think. Do I have a problem with being natural, getting back to my roots? Am I a sellout for preferring straight hair? Don't get me wrong, natural hair looks wonderful on some other people, but I hated it on me. Perhaps I just didn't know what to do with it, but I felt so insecure. I had it blow-dried, and felt like a million dollars again after it was straight. I got braids the next day and will continue to do so to ease the transition while my natural hair continues to grow-out; but my goal is to rock it naturally in about a month. Do you think I'm going to make it?

Don't Hate on Haiti

wanted to put something down about Haiti while its fresh on my mind. been hearing things on the news about the Haitian people starting to lose patience with the speed that help is arriving. I even discussed this same issue with a friend who said basically the same thing. she acknowledged how sad and devastating the situation was, but also commented on how unreasonable it was for the survivors to think that help should've arrived sooner than it did. lets start with that..."reason" able, and how likely it is to display it when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake strikes your home, kills your kids, parents, cousins, pets -- some within the blink of an eye, while others are waiting reasonably to die. Gray hairs on my WHAT?!
When I, I mean when my friend first told me she noticed gray hairs down there I couldn’t believe it. We’re only in our late 30s. The conversation took me right back to elementary school when this girl named Rhonda was playing “the dozens” with a boy in our class and said “yo momma so old she got gray hair on her coochie!” All the girls in our 5th grade class screamed “ewwwww!” and laughed.
